Frequently Asked Questions about Adoption
When can I start considering adoption?
Is placing a baby for adoption emotionally difficult?
You deserve space to talk honestly about your feelings. We can help connect you with counseling and support before and after placement.
Does the birth father have to agree to adoption?
The attorney or licensed adoption agency involved can explain what applies to your situation. Share what you know, including any concerns about contact or safety.
Can I spend time with my baby after delivery?
You can include your wishes for time with your baby in your hospital plan. You can also discuss who you would like present and when you would like the adoptive family involved.
You make your birth plan and we help coordinate those preferences, taking your health, your baby’s needs, and hospital policies into account.
Does adoption cost anything for expectant mothers?
Can I receive help with pregnancy-related expenses?
Depending on your circumstances and state law, assistance with approved pregnancy-related expenses may be available. This may include certain housing, food, transportation, phone, relocation or medical expenses.
Expense assistance is not payment for placing a baby for adoption. We will explain what is allowed per your state law.
Can I choose the adoptive family?
Yes! You have a chance to review family profiles based on what you are looking for in a family.
You can ask questions, discuss your hopes for your baby, and explore whether a family feels like the right fit.
Can I stay in contact after adoption?
Open or semi-open adoption may include updates, photos, calls, or visits, depending on the arrangement. Closed adoption generally involves no ongoing direct contact.
Discuss your preferences before placement. We will explain how contact arrangements work and whether an agreement is legally enforceable in your state. This is fully your choice.
Can I change my mind about adoption?
Exploring adoption or reviewing family profiles does not commit you to placement.
Once legal consent is signed, whether—and for how long—it can be withdrawn depends on applicable state law and the circumstances. Your attorney will explain those rules clearly before you sign anything.
What if my family doesn’t support my decision?
Disagreement from loved ones can make an already personal decision feel harder. You deserve respectful support and room to consider your choices without pressure.
We can help connect you with counseling and resources for conversations with family members. If you are a minor, the adoption professionals involved can explain any additional legal requirements.
How do I tell people I’m considering adoption?
You can decide how much personal information you feel comfortable sharing. You don’t need to explain your feelings to everyone.
You might start with: “I’m considering my options and getting information. What I need right now is support and someone who will listen.”
A counselor can help you prepare for difficult conversations and set boundaries.
Do birth mothers regret placing a baby for adoption?
Experiences vary. Some women feel confident in their decision while also experiencing grief. No one can promise how you will feel afterward.
Accurate information, time to consider your options, and support without pressure can help you make an informed decision. Support should remain available after placement, whatever your feelings may be.
Can I talk with someone who has placed a child for adoption?
We can help you explore peer support resources and, when available, connect with someone who has chosen to share her adoption experience.
Hearing another person’s perspective can be helpful, but her experience may be different from yours.
